Smoking Affects the Digestive System

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Many people do not know that smoking leads to diseases of the digestive system in addition to other known disorders of the body. If the digestive system gets affected, it will pose the same kind of risks to human life as happens when the lungs or heart is seriously damaged. One common effect of smoking that people complain about is the much neglected heartburn. This unpleasant sensation is felt when acidic juices in the stomach make their move to the esophagus. As a person smokes, the harmful chemicals contained in tobacco cause the esophageal valve to deteriorate in strength. This leads to the inefficiency of the valve in pushing back digestive acids that go the wrong way. The liver which is the strainer in the body is also at stake when a person smokes. Liver disposes bad chemicals from the body and is responsible for cleaning toxins and harmful chemicals deposited by the harmful drugs one takes in.

Another disease that smokers are prone to is the Crohn’s Disease. When the person gets afflicted with this disease, abdominal pain and diarrhoea will result leading to the necessity of a surgery. Actually what happens is that the lining of the intestines develop some sort of an inflammation. There would be inflammation starting from the mouth down to the anus. No medical treatment or surgical solution to Crohn’s Disease has been discovered till date. Another fall out of smoking is the development of gallstones, and this can lead to kidney failure. Gallstones require surgery to get them removed from the kidney.

Peptic ulcer affects the digestive system of people who smoke on a regular basis. The disease is characterized by sores in the linings of the stomach. The interesting thing is that, there is no known direct relationship between tobacco use and ulcer. Many elements combine together to cause ulcer. Smoking causes other body systems to break down, and the body is left with the inability to fight against ulcer. The life expectancy of smokers gets reduced considerably; statistical reports state that almost half of regular smokers, in a short course of time, will die of illnesses caused by smoking.

Each year, approximately, half a million people die of smoking related ailments in the United States alone. Of the different types of chemicals contained in cigarettes, at least 50 have the potential to cause cancer. And, some of the chemicals include nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar and acetone.

The harmful effects to the body unleashed by smoking are numerous. There exists not much substantial evidence or research reports to prove or disprove that other deleterious diseases are connected to or associated with smoking. The proven thing is that second hand smoke is just about as or more dangerous than regular smoking. Remember, the dangerous effects are not confined to the heart or cardio systems but also to other important internal organs in the body. It also interferes with the smoker’s behaviour and cognitive development. Smoking might be fun and enjoyable, but the consequences can be unpleasant and fatal.
